Big gardens and older houses
Roundhay grew up around its park. Victorian terraces and villas line the streets near it, there are very large houses on plots of an acre or more along Park Avenue, and further out you find brick detached and semi-detached homes from the early twentieth century. Around the Oakwood clock there is plenty of Victorian housing too.
Gardens here are often big, mature and full of trees, and that shapes the work: wide terraces, long paths, and old levels that have settled over a century and need sorting out before anything new goes down.
Stone that suits a period house
Against Victorian brick or stone, a natural sandstone or riven Indian stone looks settled almost straight away, especially laid in a random pattern of mixed sizes. Slate and porcelain give a crisper look, like the light grey porcelain in the Oakwood garden at the top of this page.
On the larger houses, a gravel drive edged with granite setts often suits the house better than a sea of block paving, and it lets rain soak straight through.
Trees and the conservation area
Roundhay Park and much of the area around it are a conservation area. Trees in a conservation area are protected: you have to give Leeds City Council six weeks’ notice before cutting down or pruning most of them. If a patio or driveway means taking out a tree or cutting into large roots, check with the council first.
Close to mature trees, we plan the levels around the roots rather than digging through them, and we will tell you at the visit if a tree means the patio should go somewhere else in the garden.

Roundhay and Oakwood questions
Do you work in Oakwood?
Yes. The porcelain patio at the top of this page and the slate job in our photos are both from Oakwood, and we cover the whole of Roundhay, Moortown and Chapel Allerton.
Can you lay a patio close to a large tree?
Often, yes, but it changes how we build it. We keep the dig away from the main roots, set the patio level to suit, and sometimes suggest a different spot. In the conservation area, cutting or removing a tree needs six weeks’ notice to the council first.
What paving suits a Victorian house?
Natural sandstone or riven Indian stone in mixed sizes looks the most at home. Gravel with granite or sandstone setts suits a period driveway. Porcelain works well if you want a deliberately modern contrast.
Can you relay an old path that has lifted?
Yes. We lift the old paving, sort out the base and the cause, whether that is roots, settlement or poor drainage, and relay it. Sound old stone can often be reused, which suits an older house.
