A growing town east of Leeds
Garforth has come a long way from its mining days. The Gascoigne family ran several pits here, the east Leeds collieries closed in the 1960s, and the M1 junctions on the edge of town brought new estates and a lot of commuters. A Garforth job can be anything from a terrace near Main Street to a house that is only a few years old.
Newer houses tend to come with an open-plan front garden and a single strip of driveway, which works until a second car arrives. Widening a drive, or paving over part of the front lawn, is straightforward when the ground is dug out and built up properly.
Driveways that stay flat
A driveway is only as good as what is under it. We dig out to the right depth, lay and compact a sub-base for the weight of a car, and set the falls so water runs to a drain, a soakaway or the garden rather than into the garage. Then the surface goes down: block paving, Indian stone, or gravel held in by a block edge.
A hard surface over five square metres at the front needs planning permission if it drains towards the road, so we either use a permeable finish or send the water somewhere it can soak away. If the kerb also needs dropping, that part is built by a council-approved contractor; our dropped kerb guide explains the Leeds process.
New-build gardens
Back gardens on newer estates often have a thin layer of topsoil over compacted clay and builders’ rubble, and a lawn that never really drains. Before a patio goes down we dig out to firm ground, so it does not sink at the corners after the first winter. Where the lawn itself is the problem, artificial grass on a free-draining base is worth considering.
The fences that come with new houses are often light panels on short posts. We replace them with heavier featheredge or composite panels on concrete posts, and we are happy to take on fencing as a job on its own.

Garforth and nearby
Besides Garforth itself we work in Kippax, Swillington, Micklefield and Allerton Bywater, and back towards the city in Crossgates, Colton and Whinmoor. South of the river, we lay driveways and patios in Rothwell, Oulton and Woodlesford.
Garforth questions answered
How far are you from Garforth?
Not far. We are based in Crossgates, a few miles west along the A63, so Garforth, Kippax and Swillington are close to home for us.
Can you widen an existing driveway?
Yes. We cut back to a straight edge, dig out the new section to the same depth as a full driveway and build it up, so the extension does not sink below the old part. Matching the old surface exactly is not always possible, so sometimes a contrasting border or a full relay looks better. We will show you the options at the visit.
Our new-build lawn is always waterlogged. What can you do?
Usually the ground under the lawn is compacted clay or rubble. We can dig it out and replace it with a free-draining base for artificial grass, or swap part of the lawn for a patio laid with a fall towards a soakaway or border.
Will you fit fencing on its own?
Yes, fencing-only jobs are welcome, from a single side panel to a whole boundary. Sound concrete posts can often be reused, which keeps the cost down.
